The Chelmer House & Studio is located on a 400sqm lot in Brisbane’s Western suburbs, between a heritage-listed home and several protected trees. In order to be built efficiently by an owner builder, the house was designed as a simple rectangular box with a gable roof. The house is long, thin and North-facing to achieve passive solar & ventilation strategies with minimal complexity. The ground floor living areas open up to a landscaped courtyard, while the upper floor bedrooms & studio lookout onto mature tree canopies. An external staircase provides access to the studio without having to enter the house. The project features exposed structural steelwork and timber joinery made from recycled flooring from the old ‘Milton Bowl’ bowling alleys. For more project information, see Green Magazine Article
